He pitched in a simulated game last week.

After spending much of the past month on the injured list with shoulder inflammation, Tigers top prospect Casey Mize returns to action Wednesday night.

He'll take the mound for Class-A Lakeland against the Bradenton Marauders.

As Tigers general manager Al Avila told reporters last week, Mize will be limited to 60-65 pitches. He threw three innings in a simulated game for the Gulf Coast Tigers last Friday.

Assuming all goes well Wednesday night, Mize will soon be back with Double-A Erie. The No. 2 overall prospect in baseball, via MLB Pipeline, was 6-0 with a 1.21 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP prior to his injury.

Should he pick up where he left off, his next stop will likely be Triple-A later this summer.

As for a promotion to the big leagues, Avila and the Tigers have been clear they will move Mize along slowly

"I hear the people (say), 'Oh, bring up Casey Mize right now.' Well, there’s really no purpose in doing that," Avila said last month. "All you’re going to do is retard the progress that he’s made already, and it’s not going to make us into playoff contenders this year. So it just defeats the purpose. It’s just logic."
