NASHVILLE, Tenn. (97.1 The Ticket) -- The Detroit Lions selected Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson with the No. 8 overall pick in Thursday night's NFL Draft.

Hockenson is the first tight end selected by the Lions in the first round of the draft since taking Eric Ebron 10th overall out of North Carolina in 2014. He’s the first Hawkeye Detroit has drafted since offensive lineman Riley Reiff in 2012, also a first-rounder.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Lions received calls about trading out of the 8th spot, but opted to make the pick.

Houston defensive tackle was on the board, but the Lions opted to go with the tight end.
