HBO's 'Real Sports' Segment Critical Of District Detroit Progress To Air Tuesday

Where are all the promised developments?

DETROIT (97.1 The Ticket) -- When the Illitch family announced the plans for Little Caesars Arena and the surrounding District Detroit, many people were excited and optimistic for the transformation of vacant lots and abandoned buildings into new residential, retail and commercial developments.

Nearly seven years later, aside from the brand new arena, the Little Caesars headquarters down the street, and a handful of other projects, there has not been much progress made on the District Detroit, and people are starting to ask questions.

It appears metro Detroiters are not the only ones with questions. HBO released a trailer for a segment detailing the lack of progress made by the Illitch family's Olympia Development in the District Detroit.

In the trailer, U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Michigan, is shown in a sit-down interview making critical comments about the lack of development, as was promised and highly publicized.

"They promised that it would be something that trickled down to the neighborhood. It hasn't trickled down," Tlaib said in the clip.

The area along Cass Avenue has seen a plethora of new surface parking lots, but the area remains largely untouched and undeveloped, leaving many people wondering why. Renderings released in 2014 promised multiple residential units near the arena, as well a nearby hotel, and several more projects closer to the downtown area.

"Once promoted as Detroit's largest residential development in decades, District Detroit has indeed failed to produce a single house, apartment unit or hotel room to date, with little active progress in site," the narrator of the trailer says.

The segment will be part of "Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel," set to air Tuesday at 10 p.m. on HBO.
