Jim Caldwell To Return To Sideline With Dolphins: Report

He spent 2018 as a consultant for the XFL.

After a year away from coaching, Jim Caldwell is set to get back in the business.

The former head coach of the Lions is prepared to join the Dolphins staff once the team makes the hire of head coach Brian Flores official, according to NFL Network. Flores, the Patriots linebackers coach/defensive coordinator, will take over in Miami once New England's season comes to an end.

Caldwell is expected to serve in a senior advisory capacity on the offensive side of the ball.

Miami marks the fifth stop of Caldwell's NFL career. While it's clear he wanted to get back on the sideline, this may not have been the return he had hoped for. Caldwell had head-coaching interviews this offseason with the likes of the Jets, Packers, Cardinals and Browns -- though it's unclear if those teams considered him a serious candidate.

In addition to serving as head coach of the Lions from 2014 to 2017, over which time the team went 62-50 and twice qualified for the playoffs, Caldwell has coached for the Colts, Ravens and Buccaneers. He led the Colts within a win of the Super Bowl in 2010 and was offensive coordinator of Baltimore's Super Bowl-winning team in 2013.

Caldwell was fired by the Lions following the 2017 season after the team went 9-7 and failed to make the playoffs. At the time, general manager Bob Quinn cited Caldwell's lack of success against the top teams in the league.
