Kelly Stafford returned home from the hospital last weekend after undergoing surgery last Wednesday to remove a benign tumor in her brain.

But a complication in her recovery sent her to the emergency room Wednesday morning.

Stafford, the wife of Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, posted on Instagram that she was trying to ween herself off her pain meds, but ultimately "the pain got so far ahead of me I couldn’t keep anything down."

She will be monitored in the hospital Wednesday night and hopes to be discharged Thursday morning. Learn about her condition HERE on a WWJ Newsradio health report.

"I thought I could do it," she wrote in her update on Instagram. "They told me tapering off the steroids was going to be very difficult. I thought I could power through the pain and massive headaches that were challenging me throughout the day. I figured I could pull my strength from one of the strongest people I know, Matthew. I told myself the pain would succumb to me, I wouldn’t succumb to it.

"I was so wrong. The pain got so far ahead of me I couldn’t keep anything down, including meds. I ended up in the ER very early this morning, back on steroids and pain medication. At first, I felt like I had failed, like I couldn’t handle it. But what I really failed at was listening to my own body. A lesson I feel like I am going to have to keep reminding myself of."

A little update: I thought I could do it. They told me tapering off the steroids was going to be very difficult. The first picture was yesterday when I was on what I thought was my last day of steroids. I thought I could power through the pain and massive headaches that were challenging me throughout the day. I figured i could pull my strength from one of the strongest people I know, matthew. I told myself the pain would succumb to me, I wouldn’t succumb to it. I was so wrong. The pain got so far ahead of me I couldn’t keep anything down, including meds. I ended up in the ER very early this morning, back on steroids and pain medication. At first, I felt like I had failed, like I couldn’t handle it.. but what I really failed at was listening to my own body. A lesson I feel like I am going to have to keep reminding myself of. Thank you again for everything. I just wanted to give a little update. They will keep me here overnight just to monitor in hopes of going home in the morning.

Kelly was diagnosed with what's known as acoustic neuroma, a very rare type of benign tumor that develops on the nerves leading from the inner ear to the brain, per the MayoClinic. It can cause hearing loss, loss of balance, dizziness and facial numbness.

If treated properly -- in this case, surgically removed -- it is generally not considered life-threatening.

Matthew Stafford has been at Kelly's side every step of the way. The Lions told him to take off all the time he needed. Still, he reported to the training facility first thing Monday morning for the second week of the team's voluntary offseason workouts.
