Lions Extreme Underdogs In NFC North -- Is This A Bet Worth Making?

The gap between Detroit and the rest of the division seems steep.

Think the Lions will win their division this season?

Get your bet in now.

According to Bovada, the Lions are overwhelming underdogs in the NFC North. While Chicago is listed at +160, Green Bay at +195 and Minnesota +240, Detroit checks in at +1,000.

That the Lions are long shots isn't much of a surprise. They're coming off a 7-9 season and a last-place finish and haven't won their division since 1993 when they were playing in the NFC Central. And for what it's worth, their preseason opener last week offered little reason for hope.

But the gap between Detroit and the rest of the NFC North feels a bit wide. The Lions do have the makings of a strong defense, and there seems to be a more stable base beneath the team in Matt Patricia's second season. Should the new-look offense do its part, Detroit could feasibly do some damage.

Would a last-to-first turnaround be a surprise? Sure, but a year after the Bears did the very same thing, it's not out of the question for the Lions.

Only seven teams are clearer underdogs in their division than the Lions, according to Bovada: the Cardinals (+2500, NFC West), Dolphins (+2500, AFC East), Bengals (+1500, AFC North), Giants (+1200, NFC East) Buccaneers (+1200, NFC South), Broncos (+1200, AFC West) and Raiders (+1100, AFC West).

Hey, the Lions play five of those teams this season: Cardinals (Week 1), Giants (Week 8), Raiders (Week 9), Buccs (Week 15), Broncos (Week 16). Maybe a first-place finish isn't so crazy, after all.
