Allen Park, Mich. – The Detroit Lions announced today that they have traded DT Akeem Spence to the Miami Dolphins for an undisclosed 2019 draft pick.

Earlier Thursday, it was reported that Spence was asked to take a paycut according to MLive.com.

ESPN is reporting Spence has agreed to receive a base salary of $2.575 million in 2018. He was originally due $3.15 million. That means Detroit will save $500,000 in cap space.

It's unclear what prompted Detroit to request the paycut. The club does still have to sign the draft class, but has more than $9 million remaining in cap space. The request could potentially signal Detroit isn't done yet in free agency, especially up front.

Spence appeared in all 16 games for the Lions last season. He had 29 tackles and 3 sacks.
