In a year in which Detroit's pro sports teams struggled across the board, Michigan and Michigan State were there to bail them out.

Particularly the Wolverines, who spent much of the season ranked in the top 10 in both football and men's basketball and who came within one win of the national championship in baseball. Add in strong seasons on the part of women's basketball and several other teams, and Michigan wins Best in College Sports for 2018-19, according to CBS Sports

The Wolverines edged out Kentucky and Oklahoma for the top spot -- and dethroned last year's winner Ohio State, who finished fifth.

CBS Sports uses a weighed points system to rank every FBS school in football, men's basketball and women's basketball -- with an emphasis placed on the former two -- plus each school's two most successful wild card sports out of baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, gymnastics, lacrosse, hockey and wrestling.

Michigan accrued 501.75 points, racking up 281.75 between football and men's basketball. The next four schools -- Kentucky, Oklahoma, LSU and Ohio State -- actually compiled more points between the top two sports, but Michigan was stronger across the board.

The women's basketball team reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament and, per CBS Sports, the men's gymnastics team finished fourth nationally, the wrestling team and gymnastics teams both finished fifth, and both women's lacrosse and women's volleyball finished ninth.

The Top 10 was rounded out by Virginia, Iowa, Florida, Notre Dame and Washington.

Michigan State, on the strength of 166 points in men's basketball, finished 11th.
