The Lions had their first player opt out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 Wednesday in DT John Atkins.

Atkins started five of Detroit's final six games last season, totaling 14 tackles over that span. He produced 20 tackles and two QB pressures over 12 games in all.

Atkins came to the Lions from the Patriots in 2018 after being cut by New England as an undrafted free agent. He signed a two-year deal with Detroit and was set to make $675,000 this season.

Instead, per an agreement between the NFL and the NFLPA, Atkins will get a $150,000 stipend and his contract will roll over into the 2021 season.

The opt-out deadline is August 3.
