Word is getting out: Don't sleep on Matthew Stafford this season.

He's been tabbed a favorite for Comeback Player of the Year. He's been called the best QB in the NFC North. And Football Outsiders founder Aaron Schatz said Wednesday that Stafford is "my darkhorse candidate for MVP."

"In the limited time that he played last year, Stafford was the fourth-most efficient quarterback by our numbers, and that defense is going to be better this year and that division is down," Schatz said on Good Morning Football. "We have both Green Bay and Minnesota down, so Detroit could compete for a playoff spot and if Stafford has a really good season like he did last year, he is definitely a dark horse MVP candidate.”

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and Ravens QB Lamar Jackson are the clear favorites for MVP, in that order. Per Odds Shark, Stafford is +5000, tied for 20th with the likes of Giants RB Saquon Barkley, Titans RB Derrick Henry and Vikings QB Kirk Cousins.

There's no doubt Stafford is poised for a big year. He was firing on all cylinders in Darrell Bevell's offense last season, and he's fully recovered from the back injury that cost him the second half of the schedule. The Lions rebuilt their offensive line and added another dynamic weapon in RB D'Andre Swift.

The question isn't so much whether Stafford can pick up where he left off. It's whether Matt Patricia and the Lions can make his performance count.
