With the NHL season suspended, Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman is staying active.

Detroit has signed Swedish free agent forward Mathias Brome to a one-year contract, the club announced Wednesday.

Brome, 25, popped onto the radar of multiple NHL teams this year with his strong play in the Swedish Hockey League. He put up 43 points in 52 games, good for sixth in the league. He's a fast-skating winger who plays a sturdy two-way game.

In addition to the Wings, Brome was drawing interest from the Canucks and Capitals. He'll have a chance to play right away next season in Detroit, likely in a bottom six role.

Brome has played professionally for seven seasons in Sweden. He spent the last three in the Swedish Hockey League, tallying 41 goals and 99 points in 156 games.
